1992 Saturn SC1 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My car has a little black box, to the right of the engine. It has a crack in it, so when the car is running, it sends a spark from the box to a screw near my plugs. Now my car seems like it is trying to bog out, when I have it running. Also, it seems to be having a problem getting a start when leaving a stop or changing gears. Could this be caused by the spark draining power and do you know what the black box is called so I can get a new one and put it in? My uncle called it a distributor but the auto parts store said that this model car does not even have a distributor. Also, someone else told me that it was called a coil. Also, do you know of any sites that have diagrams of the components of my car so that I won't have this problem again? Thank you.

If ur talking about where ur wires go on opposite end of where ur spark plugs go on those are ur coils. And under the coils it's base is called a ignition module. Let me know how it goes.

I changed the ignition coil and all the wires, but it still seems to be hesitating changing gears, mainly first to second, (it is an automatic). It also blows out a puff of black smoke when you press hard on the gas. I'm just confused and everyone says something different. Any ideas?

as far as ur black smoke sounds like a bad coolant temp sensor a bad one will cause erratic idle dieing surging overheating all kinds of things and its pretty common for them to go bad.make sure the engine is cold u will lose coolant.make sure u inspect its connector if its corroded u will need to replace the connector.also make sure u get a brass tipped one the plastic tipped ones crack and leak into the connector.there only like 10 as far as ur hestation between gears could be a transmission problem even.are all the spark plug wires in the right order on the coil and the plugs like they were before?do u have any codes?let me know what u find.
