When changing gear from first to second revs increase slightly, and again from second to third. This problem has appeared three times during the last two years, it lasts a couple of days and then disappears. Spanner light has been coming on after the last service, again it is intermittent.

Hello,

It sounds like you have a dirty throttle body. I would clean it be following this guide. Also, check for codes and let me know what comes back. Here are two guides to help us fix the problem:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/throttle-actuator-service

Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Cheers, Ken

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the response to my problem with my car, I have since purchased on ebay a code reader, and today tried to get a error code, its response is that there are no error codes, ive also taken the hose from the air filter and the carb, and cleaned the carburetor butterfly valve which had some black residue, burt not much, however I noticed the clamp that holds the air filter tube at the carb ens was not tight, and when replacing it, noticed it only tightened so much before becoming loose again, I just tightened it as much as I could, and then did the same with two clampls at the air filter end, and one of them was doing the same thing, I tried the car and the spanner light came on, but it does not stay on all of the time its intermittant, and the revs are still rising slightly when changing gear, so I will get some new jubilee clip clamps, for the hose, and hopefully this will solve the problem.

I will let you know how I get on, in the meantime I have to congratulate you on a fantastic website, which passes on valuable information to people, who would otherwise have to stump up extortionate fees at a garage, they would charge me around 70 euro just to get the diagnostics done, so 31 euro for a code reader was not bad.

I have some knowledge, with old classic bikes, and im able to do service type work myself at home, being retired. So I would like to thank you both for the help.

Kind regards Paul

Hi Ken, ive since repplaced two faulty clamps that hold the air intake tube, the spanner light has not come back on, ive looked at the car manual, and it says the spanner light is to let you know that the car needs a service, its not the engine management light, which looks like a engine, its the car with spanner, so that snot showing since I renewed the clamps, however the revs rising is still there, I did try and clean the throttle control valve, however, when my wife pressed down on the accelerator pedal, the valve did not open, only a tiny bit, so I just cleaned it as best I could, there are screws holding the valve in place, and I was not sure if taking them out would be the right thing to do, to get access for cleaning it properly, do you think that the valve is the problem, because since we have had the car which is about four years, its happened three times and has always gone away on its own, however it seems to be staying with us now.
Many thanks Paul

I would remove the throttle actuator so you can clean it good. I know it seems weird but it really helps.

Hi Ken, I took your advice and took the throttle actuator off and cleaned it good, the otherside was really black and needed a good clean, after putting it all back I drove the car but the problem was still there, ive since done a throttle body reset, by turning on the key to the first position, pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor, and waiting 10 secs, turning off key and then releasing pedal, waiting two mins for it to reset, and thats it. Sorted. Many thanks for the help.
Pau.
