Codes P0171, P0174, P0430, P0300

When I cranked the truck this morning (28°F), there was a lot of white smoke coming from the passenger side exhaust, after the upstream O2 sensor. (Leak somewhere). Also, approximately about six ounces of water came from the area too, out of the exhaust. I also believe I have a head gasket problem because after three days, I have to refill my reservoir tank.

Steam is not uncommon. The water is normal too. However, if there are no coolant leaks that you can find, you should check for a head gasket issue.

I believe there is a head gasket issue. Obviously, I am not spending the money for this old truck to get it fixed. I hear a lot about liquid head gasket sealer. Is there any out there that is effective and will not destroy the water pump?

Also, I had some more idle issues today. I checked the codes. Low and behold, bank 1 and 2 is showing lean and rich. What in the world could cause this? I have not done any repairs or anything to cause this.

That is a good question. I am not sure what a lean/rich mixture indicates. They are opposites and usually there is only one or the other. If it is rich on one bank of the engine, you may have an injector issue sticking open. Can you provide the codes you got?

Also, does exhaust leaks affect the readings from the 02 sensors? The only exhaust leaks I know of is on the passenger side. One is at the donut gasket (upstream and near 02 sensor) the other one is covered up by the heat shield I guess. It is about two feet downstream from the other leak

Hi:
Yes, anytime unmetered air gets into the system, it changes things. Most times, it will cause the O2 sensors to read as a lean setting (po171). The computer then adjusts the fuel mixture to make it richer. Once the limit is reached, (po174 po175) is set indicating the system has reached a calibrated limit and the mixture is rich. Both of these codes are most likely the result of the po171.

The po430 indicates an issue with bank 1 cat converter. Usually, the converter is bad for this code to come on.

The 172 is a rich mixture. Most likely, that is a result of a sensor that is not getting unmetered air and the computer compensating for the lean mixture.

The 1132 and 1152 indicate the sensors fail to switch due to exceeded calibrations.

I would start by fixing the exhaust leaks. These are all tied together. The 301 indicated a cylinder 1 misfire, but I believe you already know that.

Bank 1 will always be the side with cylinder 1. In this case, passenger side. See the attached picture.
