When I turn the car on the radiator fans come on immediately and then it’s starts to overheat. I haven’t checked the thermostat and due to rain haven’t had a chance to look at the weep holes on the water pump. The reservoir was empty. I bought it as a project car and just started getting into it. The missing power steering was the first thing I fixed but that’s when I noticed the overheating issue because I drove it a short bit. The point is I find it odd that even cold the fans immediately start. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

If the fans are coming on when it is cold, make sure the engine is actually overheating and there isn't a coolant temperature sensor issue. If the sensor is bad, it could turn the fans on and indicate overheating when it really isn't.

Fill the coolant and see if you can identify any leaks. Also, make sure it is actually over heating. I can tell by your comments, you have a good idea what to check.

Than you for the information.I will check those things out. But I’m pretty sure it’s overheating because after running for awhile the temperature gauge almost maxes out before I shut it down.

Okay, if that is the case, then I would recommend flushing the system and replacing the thermostat.

Let me know if that helps.
