My car started overheating really bad yesterday, and smoking from the tailpipe. I checked the oil this morning and it was not the right color. Could this be the head gasket?

It pretty much sounds like it. If the oil is foamy or kind of a yellowish white color and tailpipe emitted a white type smoke then have it looked at and coolant system pressure checked.
