I've been having problems with my 96 cobra overheating. I put a new theromstat in it in the spring, it ran hot with it. So I took it out and ran without 1 since then up till today. It still ran hot if I was sitting in traffic or alot of stop and go, but on the road it ran fine. I put a new theromstat in it today, it ran way past the red line, with it being 45 degrees outside, and on open road without traffic. I checked to make sure both my fans are running and they are. Do you have any suggetions on what this may be and how I could test it?

Just a suggestion, i've had problems with a car overheating in the past, not a mustang, but maybe checking the fan relays will help to make sure that the fans are coming on at the right time, also just make sure your using the right 50/50 coolant mixture, hope this helps maybe

Lets start with having the radiator flushed, sometimes there can be build up of scale and limits cooling. Then check to make sure there is nothing blocking the air flowm throught the rariator. These cars are meant to be with a thermastat, it slows the circulation so the radiator has time to cool the fluid down to correct temp.
