Overheating problem

I have a 95' Mitsu Eclipse 2.0 non turbo. The overflow bottle use to overheat all the time until I changed the thermostat. Since I have changed the t-stat, smoke has been coming from below the overflow bottle. (Not the bottle itself) my guess is the water pump. Could that be the problem because I have been wasting alot money?

Try this warm up the engine while running squeeze the upper hose then let go did the flow increases-if so, for a cheap fix-replace the radiator cap and see what happens.

How could replacing the cap stop the smoke? The smoke smells like boiling water. Thats why I think or thought it was the water pump. I would love to replace the cap for cheaper fix but I just want to know what it does for the radiator.
Thank you for your response
