CLUTCH PROBLEM

Good afternoon. My name is Manny. I recently developed a problem with my clutch on my 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse. It has 17500 miles. That is not a typo. It does have 17500 miles on it. I do not kinow the engine size. It has a 5 speed manual transmission. I have trouble shifting into gear. I can drive the car, but I have to double pump the clutch before I can shift. Every time I stop I have to double pump before shifting. The shift happens smoothly, and once in gear the car rides fine. Ther is no slipping or any other problem with my transmission. I took it to the dealer, who I believe didn' t even take the time to check out my car. He called me 10 minutes after telling me that they hadn't even had the time to look at my car to tell me that I need a new clutch, pressure plate, etc, etc. He also wanted $2,000.00 dollars to fix it. Can you tell me if there is a possibility that my feeling that the clutch is ok, is correct, and what the problem might possibly be. Thanks for any advice that you can give me.

It could be the prssure plate, but first I would check the fluid and slave cylinder checked, when you push on the clutch hydrolic fluid is pushed to the slave cylinder pushing in the pressure plate. The slave cylinder could be going bad and not pushing in all the way.
