My vehicle has not had the happiest life. That being said, at some point it overheated and someone just threw the thermostat out. I understand that as long as you use enough antifreeze and do not want hot air it’s sort of okay. The radiator didn’t go bone dry but when I put a new thermostat in it took two gallons to top it off with engine running. Now it has a service light on, however it runs okay, acceleration is not good but it never would put you in your seat. Plus the accelerator pedal is in a weird place. My question is this: is I am taking a beach trip in August, it is a little over 200 miles one way. I know there are millions of variables but generally would it be able to make the trip? I am very familiar with this model and this particular vehicle. It sat for years under my father in laws garage or outside. It has always run eventually. My neighbor “fixed” the ignition by hard-wiring a push button start as long as the key is in accessories (I think). Now the radio loses its memory when I remove the key. And it hollers when you cut it on for a second or two. Like if a buzzer and a male cat had a sound baby. So I don’t know what that is either. Sorry for such a long question, I appreciate any advice or suggestions, and am willing to answer any questions as best to my ability. Thank you, S

Hi, Luke, and welcome to 2CarPros.

You are asking me a loaded question. Lol Is the vehicle overheating not that you installed a thermostat? Also, you really shouldn't run without one. It takes the engine longer to warm up, and it can actually cause it to overheat because there is too much flow to allow coolant to cool off in the radiator.

As far as the cat thing (by the way, I loved that description and needed a good laugh) Can you explain what exactly is happening and where the noise is coming from? As far as the push button start, you should have to have the key in the run position and not ACC for it to run, so I'm not sure what happened with that.

My recommendation is this. Since I'm not there to actually see what was done to it, drive it as much as you can near home and see if anything acts up. If it seems dependable, I would try using it. In all honesty, 200 miles one way really isn't too far, but I would hate to say go for it and then it fail for you. Try what I said. Drive it as much as you can near home and see how it does for you.

Let me know if you have other questions or need anything.

Take care,
Joe

Okay, so it’s been a while but I have narrowed down some things it has started to overheat because it loses about a half a gallon of coolant if I am on the road for over 25 minutes. I didn’t let it overheat so it never started hissing until the other day. It didn’t red line but it got between the last marker and red. When I shut off the engine it was hissing from behind the alt. I finally saw that there are two bolts on the engine right behind the alt. The bolt closest to the front is hissing steam when it over heats. You can just barely see it bubbling out when it gets too hot. That is the only place that I can find a leak. Any ideas? They would be appreciated.
