My SUV is making a constant thumping sound from behind the dash board on the passenger side when the door is opened. The key doesn't even have to be in the ignition for the sound to occur. A bunch of internet research makes me believe the blend door actuator (Motorcraft part YH1770) needs to be replaced. I have learned that on some Ford vehicles this is an easy repair when the actuator is located behind the glove box. Before I even attempt this repair I would like to know where the blend door actuator is located on my SUV. It would be nice if it is located behind my glove box, but somehow I don't think I am that lucky.

Hi,

Please be aware that there are two temperature actuators on this vehicle. I will provide the directions for the passenger side, but before you replace it, just confirm it is the correct one. Simply place your hand on it and you should feel the thumping.

To get you started, here is a link that explains in general how one is replaced:

Here are the directions specific to your vehicle (right side):

Removal

Remove the Audio Front Control Module (ACM) . Refer to, Section 415-00A , Section 415-00B , Section 415-00C or Section 415-00D .
Lower the glove compartment.
While pushing the glove compartment door tabs, position the glove compartment downward.

NOTE: The forward passenger temperature blend door actuator screw can be removed with a combination wrench. With one hand working through the ACM opening, hold the top end of the combination wrench. With the other end of the combination wrench pointing away (toward the right front corner of the vehicle), and with the other hand working through the glove compartment opening, the combination wrench can be manipulated.

Remove the passenger temperature blend door mode door actuator.
Disconnect the passenger temperature blend door mode door actuator electrical connector.
Remove the screws and the passenger temperature blend door mode door actuator.

Installation

NOTICE: The ignition key must be off when replacing the actuator. Energizing the actuator before installation will cause the part to become positioned incorrectly and proper orientation will be lost. Incorrect actuator operation will result.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
NOTE: The purpose of the module actuator position calibration is to allow the Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) module to reinitialize and calibrate the actuator stop points. To carry out calibration, carry out the following steps.

____________________________________________________________________

To recalibrate the actuator, follow these directions.

Remove Body Control Module (BCM) fuse 46 (10A) for at least one minute.
NOTE: When the ignition switch is switched to the ON position, the HVAC module will initialize and calibrate the actuators. Calibration of the actuators will take approximately 30 seconds.

Reinstall BCM fuse 46 (10A). Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and wait 30 seconds before verifying correct mode door actuator operation.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe
