Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage to the smaller wire on the starter. You should get 12+ volts.

Let me know what you find.

You need an adapter between the fuel filter and the pump.

For the past 6 years our sportage will all of a sudden not start, it will run excellent for a few weeks to a few months and then one day it will not start. After letting it sit eventually it does start and then it will be ok till the next time. My mechanic can not find the problem as the check engine light does not come on [it is working]. The dealer charged $1500.00 for a new gas tank [ claimed that it was rusted inside] and changed the fuel pump still the problem continues. We have had the mother board changed my mechanic the fuel filter, sensors, . The dealer claims that they found 2 grounds but did not elaborate where they were. Have changed the clutch safety switch. The clutch makes a sqeaky sound when sitting in traffic and has a light grind feeling to it. We love this vehicle and it runs like new except for this issue could it be a ground, or maybe in the clutch, transmission that causes it not to start. There is no smell of electrical over heat. Please help

Yes it does, it feels like it wants to start almost like it is not getting gas, however once what ever it is falls in place it cranks right up with no hesitation. When it is working right the start up is immediate upon turning the key.

Very difficult to diag with the car let alone from here without seeing it or touching it.

Did anyone check for any history codes?

I would start with fuel pressure test. I would be suspect of the crank sensor. Mass air flow sensors have been known to cause issues like this as well.

Just to add, that fuel tank you had done had a recall from kia for that. Did you submit a bill to kia for this?

Thank you, we were not made aware of this, they claimed that they found rust in the tank and being the so called pros we did not question it. How does one submit a bill to Kia. I have looked for a corporate address in the past with no luck.

You can call the dealer for that info. Have them run your vin number as there were several recalls that you may not have had done. Get a copy of your receipt from the shop and forward it to them for them to give you back the money

Electrical problem
2000 Kia Sportage Automatic 145000 miles

I dont know much about cars so I apologize in advance.

I left the headlights on by accident one day and when I tried to start my car nothing happend. No lights anywhere, no sounds. Nothing at all. I came outside later and the window motors were going click click click. I put the key in the ignition and it stops, take it out and its back to the click click click. I checked back in a couple of hours and the clicking had stopped.

I figured the battery had drained completely so I tried a jump start with a friends car. No luck.

We kept one side of the jumper cables on the battery and touched the other side together and it made a large spark so I think the battery is still good.

My dad checked the fuses in the engine and tried to jump start it again. He was checking if electricty was getting to different parts of the engine
. I really couldnt say which but everywhere he tested was getting power.

His guess is its electrical. I bought the car used and apparently there was an alarm built into the car after the original owner purchased it. By the time I bought it the alarm had been disconnected. Is there any chance remenants of the alarm system shut my car down? Please help, thank you.

Hi:
If the alarm is disconnected, chances are it isn't causing the problem. Did you check to make sure the ground to the engine block is clean and tight? Also, are you getting 12+ volts from the battery? Let me know.

Problems starting car started when the dealer installed a car alarm.
There is a new battery in the car, but no juice is passing to the starter.
Could it have something to do with the car alarm?

I have a 2000 Kia Sportage Ex. The service engine light is not illuminated and no codes are being sent to the OBD II reader. I can go out, start the vehicle, it runs fine, go to the store, park, come back out, try to start it and it will not start. If I let it sit for a while, it will usually restart. Then while driving it, it will sporadically just die and refuse to start. Again, if it sits for a while, it will usually restart and run fine until it either will not restart or dies again while driving it. There is no consistent pattern. We have replaced the fuel pump and problems are the same. It seems like a sensor or switch must be malfunctioning and/or possibly shutting down once the vehicle reaches operating temperature. Then somehow resets itself after the car sits for a while. Any ideas on what I should check next or the likely problem is? PLEASE HELP!
