Loose gear shift means the bushes are worn and it would not allow the first, second, fifth and reverse to be selected.

From bottom of car, try twisting the gear rod and see if it can be shifted into all the gears.

Check if the locking pin for the rod at trans end is worn, it will result in excessive free on the rod movement.
