The engine warning light came on. The car runs fine with good milage. The dealer says the computer shows the cat conv needs replacement, as it had been replaced with a poor quality replacement without our knowledge. What risks are involved in not replacing the cat? I don't know which numbers came up on the computer.

Hi Scott,

If the catalytic converter is bad, you would fail emission.
Performance would be affected with higher fuel consumption.
In time to come, it would clog itself due to its inefficiency in producing the heat necessary to burn of unburnt fuel from the engine.

I would suggest getting a free scan done at your local Autozone outlet and provide me with the exact error code to understand the situation better.
