2002 Taurus Air Conditioner

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus, 98,000 miles. When I have the fan on "air" it blows cold air like the air conditioner. Why is that? Isn't is supposed to be just the air outside, not heated or cooled?

By air, do you mean "a c" as opposed to "max a c"?
Max a c recirculates the cooled air in the car, while regular a c cools the outside air, max would probably be a more efficient mode especially on hot, really muggy days, I never use regular a c, only max.
