1998 Taurus Alternator Issues

My 1998 Ford Taurus has 173,000 miles and v6 engine. In November of 2006 I had the alternator replaced because the battery light kept coming on. In April of 2007, it happened again and the car completely died all of a sudden. Had the battery replaced and the alternator replaced again. The battery light started flashing again in August and it seems to run very rough every time this happens. Doesn't matter what the speed or how long I've been driving. There is no consistency with when it happens. I know that alternators shouldn't go bad that often so there must be some other issue with the car and no one else seems to have any clues. Any ideas?

Have the battery cables been checked? Pay particular attention to the Neg cable were it connects to the block.

It's been hot and humid everyday lately, so I guess I could say this could have started happening when the heat and humidity got much worse. A few months ago, I was in a cooler, less humid area and the car ran fine. But, I don't know how directly related it is. Thanks for you reply!
