I have a 2000 Ford Taurus 3.0 V6 (I think that it's OHV, not DOHC). Several times during last two weeks, car has started weakly, but started. Two days ago, while I was out of town, the car wouldn't start, my wife had it jumped and drove home. She had battery replaced, but then later that same day, the car wouldn't start again. That tells me that the problem isn't the battery. Does that mean that it's going to be the alternator or could it likely be something else?

You can start by checking to make sure nothing has been left on say an interior light if thats not the case disconect the positive battery cable while it is running if it dies then yes its the alternator also make sure all you terminals are free from corosion or you can simply take it up to your local auto parts store to have it tested they will do it for free autozone or advance auto

The first thing to check is to see if the voltage is correct when the car is running it should be 14.5 volts this will tell you if the alternator is putting out
