Once in a while my car seems to go dead like it is not getting any spark or possibly gas. It only lasts a second then is O.K. I am worried it will stop for good. I am going to but in new plugs. I have had the car 30 months. The engine is sweet and very smooth. It is NOT S.H.O. Just Taurus GL

This is a hard one to diagnose because the problem is not always present. My best guess is that the ignition module is getting old and ready to fail. Given the age and mileage, I would replace the ignition module and the PIP sensor in the distributor. That will most likely clear up the problem.

I had similar problem with my 92 LX 3.8Liter, sudden abrupt engine stoppage causing hard downshift. I replaced Ignition module and pick-up coil in distributor, but still did it. Was faulty relay module on mount above radiator (right side). Seemed to do the trick. Car was also not starting intermittenly, and relay replacement cured that problem. I bought original at Ford dealer; pricey at $204, but fixed problem.
