Sometimes when driving around in my ranger, I notice that my fuel gauge hand drops to empty then slowly moves back up. Or sometimes it dont work for a couple weeks then all of a sudden starts working again. Could there be a short in the gauge or maybe the sending unit is going bad? I also noticed that when its not working that when I turn the key to crank the truck the hand acts like it wants to work but moves back down quickly. This truck has a mind of its own. Any suggestions gentleman?

Thanks

It does sound like a bad sending unit. The rheostat that sends power to the gauge is most likely wearing out causing the problem. The only other things there are it the body control module or the gauge its self. However, chances are the rheostat.
