97 Ranger gas gauge

I have a 1997 ford ranger xl. It has over 200000 miles and still run like it came off the lot( just like all fords) the question I have is the gas gauge doesnt work at all.I have heard of this is a flaw in rangers. My father who bought the truck new then gave it to me said one day he was driving over some bumps and it quit working. All the other gauges work fine except the gas. I am saving to get it fix but if it could be somthing simple that I can fix it would save me alot

Have the fuel sending unit checked out-

No someone else suggested it could be the sending unit
