2001 Ford F-150 Will not go into second smoothly

Engine revs high before going into second after backing off the gas. Will go into neutral if you punch it to go into passing gear.

Does it slip when it hits second? Has the check engine light come on? Is the trans fluid clean and full?

My first guess is the trans control module (TCM).
