Engine Mechanical problem
1993 Ford F150 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

We have been having trouble with my husband's truck not starting for a while now. First it was the battery, got a new one. Then the starter, he replaced that with a used one. It ran good for a while then it wouldn't start on rainy days, found out it was the distributor cap, that worked for a few weeks then it would only start up when it wanted to. The other day we changed the wires and the coil, realizing it was the coil. Last night he went to store and went out to start it and it won't start again and it is making a horrible noise and not turning over like it usually does. What could it be this time?

Hi, is it the starter, making the terrible noise? Sometimes if the starter gear isn't making good contact with flywheel, it will make a terrible noise.

Is the only way to fix this is to get a new starter? Or is there something else we can try?

You need to check teeth on the flywheel, if they are wore down, you need new flywheel. There may be a dust cover under the flywheel that you can remove and check teeth on flywheel. I can't tell about the starter? I don't know if shims would help? Were there shims when you removed the old starter? If the starter gear is too far from flywheel, shims can help get the gear closer, so teeth will mesh.
