The black smoke indicates it is running rich (too much gas, not enough air). This takes me back a ways. I believe it is fuel injected correct?

I need you to check fuel pump pressure and the regulator. If you need directions, let me know.

If you are getting black smoke, that tells me it's getting too much fuel to the engine. If the regulator isn't working properly, it could be allowing too much pressure to build in the system.

Before replacing it, here are directions to check for pressure. Make sure it is bad first. You will need a fuel pressure gauge. Most parts stores will lend ir rent one to you.

The next thing I would check is the temp sensor. It tells the computer the outside temp and the coolant temp. From that, the computer decides how rich or lean to make the fuel mixture.

Okay, that makes a difference. When the mechanic told you the timing was wrong, I believe he ment the distributor needed adjusted not a new timing chain. When you turn the distributor, you are adjusting the timing. You need to get a timing light and check to make sure the distributor is in the correct position. Also, are you sure you didn't pull it out enough for it to jump a tooth on the distributor?

Everything is starting to make sense to me now.

Let me know.

The black smoke indicates too much fuel. You replaced the fuel pressure regulator and temp sensor. I would start checking to see if you have a sticking injector.

Have you checked to see if there is power to the injector? You need a noid light to test that.

Let me know.
