Air Conditioning problem
2002 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi. The AC is my 2002 Ford Explorer is blowing plenty cold and with plenty of air pressure. The only thing is, about a day or so ago it would make this very strange, loud, thumping sound when I put it on high. The noise would eventually go away. Now the noise occurs whenever I turn it on. Loud banging, thumping. I did not let it keep running, so I have no idea if it would go away or not. Any thoughts on what it might be? Is this a dealer type repair or something an independent could handle? THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Is it coming from the dash or under the compartment?

Try taking off the belt and feeling the pully on the ac pump it shouldnt wiggle at all, if it does the bearings are bad.

It seems to be coming from right behind the vent, so I would say the dash. I need to clarify from earlier post that it also occurs when the heater or vent are used. Any thoughts?

Since you say it happens no matter the accesory used as long as the fan is running? If so you probably will have to take out the blower motor and make sure the blower attachment is tightened properly, also make sure its not hitting anything under the dash.
