3 days ago my check gage light went on for about 5 minutes and went off. The next day it went on again (both times after only driving for 10 minutes or so). I checked all my fluids and the coolant was low so I added more. However the next day (today) the check gage light went on again like before and the coolant gage needle shot all the up to the high area for a good two minutes. Again, the total driving time was around 10 minutes.

Is this something I can fix myself or should I have it serviced?

Chances are you need a new thermostat. It isn't hard to replace and the part is cheap.

If you need directions or help, let me know. However, that is where I would start.
