Spong in nylonbag over the engine

When I was cleaning the engine from sand suddenly and accidentally for the first time I found above the engine a sponge in nylon bag. Please explain to me what that this sponge

Only one of the pics came through. The one with the item sitting on the seat. It's hard to actually see what it is from the pic, but I have to be honest. I have never seen anything like that on the top of an engine. If it is a sponge and a nylon bag, I have to say it doesn't belong there.
