Follow the hose coming off the fitting where the thermostat is. This will be where one of the bigger coolant hoses comes from the radiator. The smaller hose will go to the heater block and it will be joined by the return line as well. I would unhook the connections to the block and plug the lines with a plug of some sort. That should get you by until the core problem can be resolved.
