I have a 1994 ford escort lx manual tranny. I can get in all gears except for fifth. My brother forced it into gear. It went in but threw itself out of gear. So the question is what is wrong please need help. Heres a quick hitory I bought this car and have been working on this car since I bought it. The transmission was completly dry of tranny fluid!

Either the shift fork is bent, or the syncro is bad.

Can you put it in 5th with the engine off?

Yes I do believe so. Their is also alot of play in the stick when its in gear. If its the syncro should I try a rebuild or just go get a junkyard tranny?

My chiltons manual doesnt say anything about the shifter. Any suggestions on what I should repair or replace

Have someone inside the car working the shifter while you visually inspect whats going on with the shift linkage on the transmission under the hood.

Maybe you'll be able to find something that is sloppy.
