When I fill the car up with gas it will not start. I have to pump the gas a few times and then put it in drive immediately.

Very common on these cars, the purge control valve for the EVAP system fails in the open position. When you fill the gas tank it pushes a lot of the fuel vapor out of the gas tank and into the intake manifold. Effectively it floods the engine, you holding the gas open allows in more air and it finally burns off the extra fuel. The valve is a simple item to change. It is on the front side of the engine between the exhaust header and the block.
Two spring clamps and an electrical connector to change it out.
