Good day,

My name is Muhimu, I have two major messages on my dashboard of my car
Xc 60 T5 2014 model as follows:

1) ABS/DSTC failure service required.
2) City Safety service required.
3) Time for regular maintenance, (I believe this one can be reset after regular service as it was set during our last service).

Once I have those messages, I cannot access several factions:

1) Cruise control.
2) City drive stops to be active.

Someone advised to send the ABS control unit together with pump to repair to modex technology which I did but still I am getting the same messages as it was before.

Please assist.

Thanks,

Muhimu

Hi,

The indicator (ABS/DSTC) could be something as simple as a wheel speed sensor. Note: this will deactivate the cruise control. Have you had the computer scanned to identify if there are stored diagnostic trouble codes? If you haven't, that is where I would start.

If you want to, check each of the wheel speed sensors to make sure they are connected, in good condition, and working. Here is a link that shows how that is done manually:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/abs-wheel-speed-sensor-test

However, I would start with the can-scan. CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, all the computers/modules are tied together via a few wires. By doing this, it will pull codes regardless of the module they are stored in.

Here is a video showing it being done:

https://youtu.be/InIlnsjOVFA

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your instructions. This issues started a way back by checking and replacing the right side wheel sensor and the same message comes on again the same day. That was after checking with diagnosis tool.
After several communications with modex based in Toronto-Canada we decided and advised to send the unit to the shop. I believe we are not yet touching the problem as the messages still staying on as it was before.
I will now go through manual speed sensor testing and check the wiring. Only one favor I am asking from your side is to assist to get the wiring diagram for my vehicle just incase the testing of wheel sensor will be positive. If yes, what’s the requirements to get the proper diagram.
With this mail, here his attachment of the last diagnosis report done by local technicians.

Thanks,

Muhimu

Hi,

The only fault indicated is the parking brake module. Are you having any issues with it?

As far as the wiring harness, I attached it below. I had to cut the pic in half to make it readable for you. However, I did overlap them so you can follow from one to the next.

Here is a link you may find helpful when testing:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Good day Joe!

Sorry for rate responding on this mail due to be busy trying to check the everywhere to see if the matter can be solved!
I followed the instructions over video clip and harness wiring as it’s shows below!
1) The speed sensor reading is around 4.560 ohms which is same as left side sensor.
2) We checked the harness cable from sensor holder to BCM by continuity is okay.
3) I even swapped the sensor from left side to right side and the result is the same that the reading on right side But still the sensor doesn’t send any magnetic voltage to BCM.
I am suspecting the bearing or drive shaft. What’s your opinion.
Thanks,
Muhimu

Hi,

When you checked the sensors at the wheels, did you spin them to see if there is a signal from the sensor?

Also, I attached a pic below of the ABS ground. It is located in the left rear wheel housing. It would be a good idea to check that as well.

Let me know if the sensor at the affected wheel is producing voltage when you spin the wheel. The sensor could be good and there could be a problem with the toner ring.

Also, is the U012100 the only code that is still present? I attached the diagnostics below for that code which is related to the parking brake module.

Let me know.

Joe

Hi Joe!

Sorry for late reply due to the testing procedure took a bit longer!
1) Yes I am still getting the same faults code No U012100.
2) I measured the voltage from the right side sensor and no any voltage coming our. Surprisingly the same sensor is giving the voltage when we swapped to the left side 3, 65 mil volts(see the attached picture No 1).

3) I checked the surface of connection of sensor is nice and well clean(see the attached picture No 2).

4) I checked the ground as your instructed but it intact (see the attached picture No3).

So I still suspecting the wheel bearing it might be worn out. Please give your view.

Thanks,

Muhimu

Hi,

It sounds as though the sensor is good. Have you checked wiring at the connection? Is there any dirt or grease on the toner ring that would prevent the sensor from producing a signal? Also, have you checked the wires between the sensor and the module?

Let me know.

Hi Joe,

Yes, I checked the harness cable in two different methods.

1) We disconnected the sensor and check continuity between connector to control module and found okay.
2) We connected the sensor back and measured the sensitivity by ohm meter and got the same value to control module.
So I don’t have any doubts of harness cable.
The only issue is in my mind is two things
1) The drive shafts seams to be defective as there some noise coming from right side during the corner especially when the car its moving slowly.
2) Also there are knocking noise comes during stop and released break paddle especially when your on traffic jams! Which drive to think about front drive shaft and wheel bearings
What’s your view or suggestions!
Thank and hope to hear from you soon.
Muhimu

If you are hearing a noise, it could be a bad CV joint or wheel bearing. If you start out with the steering turned sharply in one direction, do you get a clicking sound? Is there a humming or howling sound when driving?

Let me know.

Hi Joe,

Yes, two knocking sound coming out in deferent position or senecio:

1) When your stopping the car on drive position example traffic jams or waiting the traffic lights, before taking over the clicking noise comes out or,
2) Starting moving when it’s in sharp steering fully turn, then the knocking clicks continuously till the car is moving straight.
But during driving no any noise or howling noises.
Thanks

Hi,

If it is clicking as described, I suspect it is the outer CV joint on one of the front axles. Can you tell if it is on the left or right front of the vehicle?

Let me know so I can get you specific directions for this vehicle.

Here is a link that shows in general how one is replaced:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-cv-axle

Let me know.

Take care,
Joe

Hi,

I attached the directions specific to this vehicle. Note that the right axle has a carrier, so make sure to check that as well. See pic 1.

The remaining pics are the directions from the manual. I hope this helps.

Take care and let me know how things turn out for you.

Joe

Hi Joe.

It’s seams the noise comes from drive shaft and I decided to order the new drive shaft both side as well a carrier bearing too. The items could take few weeks due to COVID situation. While I am waiting the price quote, can you also suggest the reliable source of part suppliers?
Also I have one msg coming up says(Reduced engine performance)see attached picture. This just comes whenever you start the car and driver for few distances from 1 to 2 kms. Is this can be related with speed sensor or it’s something else?
Thanks,
Muhimu

Hi,

The reduced power could be a number of things. In this case, you really need to scan the computer in the manner I mentioned above. Otherwise, it will become a guessing game which usually results in a lot of wasted money.

Now, I'm not sure I understand the other question. Did you already order the parts or waiting to find a supplier? Also, I'm not sure of your location, so I'm not sure what is available for you.

Let me know.

The scanner doesn’t show anything, just one for speed sensor. Maybe I should wait till the sensor matter been resolved first.
Another thing which come to my mind is the changing the fuel filter, it’s looks my car doesn’t have ordinary filter as seams comes with something calls canister filter (see attached picture). Is this replaceable?
Is the factional as fuel filter? Please help.
Concerning my location, I am in Tanzania (East African) and the nearest parts source is South Africa or online ordering.
Thanks

Good day team,

My car was fixed by replacing the ABS sensor and wheel bearing. Thank you for your help
I am facing another issue, soon after replacing the said parts, the car was running smoothly and suddenly the steering became stiff, and mechanics said that the hydraulic steering pump was defective. The problem persists after replacing it and we divided to by the steering rack which arrived 3 days ago. The steering is back to being smooth as it used to be, but hydraulic pipes are getting hot which I think is not normal. Question:
What’s allowable temperature should be on steering hydraulic pipes and pump?
Please assist me with that with consideration that the steering doesn’t have a sensor on it
Thanks,
Muhimu
