I was driving onto the freeway as soon as I hit 50 to 60 mph it was like the car didn't want to go anywhere. I started to pull over to shoulder and it died out and wouldn't start. I had it towed home and now a few days later it starts up but if I try to accelerate the gas while in park it seems like its really rough and it kind of sounds like the engine doesn't want to rev up the rpms. Please someone help.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

Does the check engine light stay on when the engine is running? I ask because this could be a few different things. Components related to the ignition (crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor, coil and others) can act this way. Actually, when a camshaft sensor fails on these vehicles, the engine struggles to go over 2,500 RPM's.

Also, a fuel pressure issue can cause this. So, if the check engine light is on, you really need to scan the car's computer to determine if there are diagnostic trouble codes stored in the system. That will point us in the right direction.

Here is a quick video that shows how that is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times parts stores will lend or rent one to you.

Without that information, it can become a guessing game. However, take a look through this link. It discusses the basic condition you described. Let me know if it seems to be correct.

Okay, what I really need you to do is this. If the check engine light is staying on while the engine runs, scan the computer for codes and let me know what you find. If it doesn't stay on, then we need to start eliminating things.

If that is the case, I first suggest checking fuel pump pressure and check to see if there are any engine vacuum leaks. Here are links showing how to do it:

I have also included diagnostic flow charts for the fuel system. They are a bit more involved, but I thought I would add them. Here is a list of possible causes for fuel related issues that correlate with the pictures attached:

SYMPTOM
CHECKING FUEL DELIVERY

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Fuel Pump Relay
- Fuel Pressure Out Of Specs
- Restricted Fuel Supply Line
- Fuel Pump Inlet Strainer Plugged
- Fuel Pump Module
- Fuel Delivery System Operation
- Fuel Pump Relay Fused B+ Circuit
- (A141) Fuel Pump Relay Output Circuit Open
- (Z1) Fuel Pump Ground Circuit Open/High Resistance
- Fuel Pump Module

Let me know what you find. If you do scan the computer and get codes, let me know what they are.

Take care,
Joe
