ECM purchase need to be programmed?

This is the ecm that came on the car. E39a 12658498/ serv#12653998. I want to buy another one from rockauto that is e39a 12653998/ser#12653998. Are they the same, and does the one from rockauto need to be programmed?

So this should work, the numbers done need to match exactly because they are from the same ECM "family".

RockAuto’s 12653998 should be the correct match by service number for what you have.

Yes, the new ECM will need to be programmed, I use these guys, they do good work
