1997 Dodge 2500 has been slipping while in drive seems worse as you are slowing to a stop. Have replaced the speed sensors am just wondering if the overdrive button is bad or does the tranny need to be replaced or rebuilt

If the transmission is slipping, either the clutches are worn, it could be low on trans fluid or the filter may be partially plugged.

Is the fluid clean and full?

Yes it is full on fluid. The funny thing is if you manually shift this truck there is no problem, leads me to believe that this is an electronic problem not a tranny problem.

When you manually shift, bands are forced to assist to hold it in gear which may prevent some of the slipping
