Air conditioner stops engine

I have a 2002 Grand Caravan with 76000 miles and a 3.2 liter engine. The van runs fine but when we turn on the air conditioning unit, the engine stops. The vent and fan systems work fine. Is the air conditioning unit seized? Is this a fix for a pro or a back yard?

How good is the back yard? Have an assistant start the van and the a/c, see whats happening with the compressor. If it is siezed take it to an a/c shop. It will need the entire system evacuated and flushed, so the new compressor ans accumultor don't get ruined with old compressor bits!
