1996 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup, V8, Automatic, has trouble starting, I have to jiggle the ignition to get it to start. What could be causing this?

Tilt steering? Trying to start with the wheel tilted up?

The ignition switch mechanically activates a lever which runs down part of the steering column to another switch, which activates the starter.

If it or the tilt is loose, that can make it hard to start the vehicle with the wheel in the tilted up position.

Try tilting the wheel down to see if it helps. You may need the steering column serviced or replaced to permenantly fix this problem.

I am a locksmith and have found that on some of these models (I'm not sure of the year), the lock cylinder has a cam of sorts on the end of it that actuates the electronic module on the steering column. At times, the cam will crack or even break causing your problem. Also in the worst case scenario you may have to change out the electronic module. The good news is you do not have to pull the steering wheel. You will have to turn the switch to run I believe to pull it though. Then there is a retainer button on it to allow you to pull it straight out.
Good luck.
