Depending on the engine size, they only hold 4.5 or 5 quarts of oil. Overfilling can be just as harmful as letting it run low. The spinning crankshaft will whip up the oil and introduce air bubbles which prevent the oil from isolating moving parts from each other. Please tell me you didn't check it while the engine was running!
If there was no oil showing on the dipstick after the engine had been off for a few minutes, suspect serious damage to the crankshaft, connecting rods, and their bearings. Adding oil after the damage is done is too late. There are other things that can make loud noises that are not always serious. Have a mechanic look at it, and have the excess oil drained out, or have a regular oil and filter change performed.
