Dan:
If the battery is disconnected, there should be no continunity or resistance unless you complete the circuit. Here is a how to for checking for a draw on the battery. Try it and let me know what you find. If there is a draw, simply remove one fuse at a time to determine what circuit is causing the draw so you can focus on that area,

Let me know what you find.

I have traced the problem of my battery being drawn down to the fuel pump circuit. By removing the fuse for the fuel pump the draw is elimated. If I remove the relay with the fuse in place the draw continues. Does this eliminate the realy as the possible cause. Is there always current at the pump that does not route thru the fuse. Any advice or can you tell me where I can locate a schematiic

Hi, there maybe an oil pressure switch in the fuel pump circuit. If that switch is stuck in the closed position, your pump will run all the time. Number 8 by the distributor. 5.0 and 5.7

Thanks, that sounds plausible since at this point I believe it has to be something else on this circuit since disconecting the fuel pump relay does not solve the problem.

You probably have what is called a parasitic drain, that is there is a excessive draw on the battery from. One of the circuits. So you want to check the draw. You need to disconnect one battery terminal and install a digital ohm meter, set to the amp scale, in between the battery and the cable that you dis- connected. Don't have any accessories on and close the doors as to not add excessive draw. Your meter will read the draw on the battery and should be around 30 milli-amps on that vehicle. If the draw is higher than that, you need to determine what it's from. Set the meter on the milli-amp scale. If you set the meter to measure voltage, it will not tell you the draw as there is always a small voltage through the cable Then, one by one pull fuses and check for when the draw drops back into range and you have the circuit that has the problem.

I have a 99 silverado 4.9L 130,000k the longer I let it sit the less battery a have when I try to start it I found a forum that talked about putting a test light between the negative cable and the negative post if the light lights then there is a draw I get a bright light then when I do this. Pull the radio fuse the light goes out so I guess the radio is my bad draw? The problem is with the radio fuse out it kills the speedo tach. Fuel gauge ect. With the radio fuse in it lights the light for about 15 sec. Then the light will go out when I disconnect my test light and reconnnect the light comes back on for 15 more sec. Any ideas replace the radio?
