Problem started months ago when you turn key to start-the dash lights come on but won't crank. Might happen once a month. I would try 3-4 times then would start. Has gotten progressively worse. When it happens now I will pull the starter relay (located in under hood fuse panel) and jump terminals to start. I will then replace starter relay. If I then turn off the key and restart car everything works. It may then work for several days and weeks and then won't start. I have replaced the relay and still have the problem.

If you are getting power to relay and all good there then sounds to me like the starter solenoid may be bad. would check the posts or battey cable to starter if good then replace the soleniod. that should fix you problem the relay only removes the load from the switch and activates the soleniod witch makes the battery conection to starter.

This guide can help fix it

Number eight crank fuse keeps blowing. had ignition switch and harness replaced. can neutral safety switch be bypassed? seems harness leads to that switch then to starter relay.

Hi, thank you for using 2CarPros. Sorry you're having troubles. Lets see if we can straighten them out.

It is unlikely the switch is the issue. Have you tested the starter and the starter solenoid?
You can easily narrow it down to one or both them with a remote starter switch. They are cheap and save you from pulling the starter to have it tested. If you hook it up and press the button and nothing happens it could be a shorted solenoid or starter.

Thank you for using 2CarPros.

Starter and solenoid were tested. also tested with a fuse savor in park and neutral. lots of shaved wires and some wire nuts under dash board yes wire nuts! So we’re thinking somewhere from ignition switch to neutral safety to starter relay a bare grounded wire.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

You would have to bypass the range sensor and then it won't start at all. I attached a portion of the schematic. I see fuse 8 and it goes directly to the range sensor. Disconnect the range sensor and see if the fuse blows or pull the starter relay and see what happens. If it doesn't blow with the relay pulled, it's between the relay and the starter.. At least that will help us narrow it down. By the way, wire nuts? Ugh!

Let us know.

My truck only occassionally starts, but turns over with no problem. The battery and alternator checked out fine. The truck starts with no problem at all when I jump it from another vehicle. Could it be im getting a voltage leak from the starter and need to replace it?

Make sure the ground wire from the battery is properly attached to the engine block. Make sure it is tight, clean and in good condition.

If it turns over, you are getting juice to the starter. You should check for spark to the plugs, fuel to the carb or injectors, and distributor to be sure the spark happens when it is supposed to. It can easily be an electronic problem - if your different sensors and computers aren't communicating the right info, the mechanical things can occur properly but the truck still not start. You can get many of the sensors checked by a parts place or a dealership.

Tell more about the conditions when it does or does not start.

Replace the igntion switch. That has to be where the problem is coming from. It is located near the bottom of the steering column. That is where power goes first before making its way to the starter.

Let me know if it works. If you have a auto electric shop near, have them check the old one before replacing it, but I'm confident that is where the problem is coming from.

Let me know what you find, have a great holiday, and thanks for using 2carpros.com.

The truck wont start. Had a mechanic go over it thoroughly, even replaced the starter, checked relays etc... still nothing.
He thinks maybe its the trucks anti-theft device thinking the truck's being stolen.
Could this be the case? And if so, is there a way to remove or override it?
Whats your opinion?
Thank-you.

ok next step would be to see if energy is being used when attempted to crank do this by turning on the headlights and trying to crank it, do the lights dim, stay bright?

if they stay bright then chances are its not drawing current, i would then check the neutral safety switch, starter relay, fuses, and ignition switch to make sure they are functioning.

What has all been checked/replaced?

Okay made a little bit of progress. There is power getting to the ignition and starter.
It wont crank though unless you crawl underneath and cross terminals on the cylinoid. Then it will run for approx. 30 seconds, afterwhich it shuts itself down.
Then the anti-theft light comes on thinking its being stolen.
Checked relays and fuses - all okay.

usually it will just allow the vehicle to crank and not fire up if the theft light is bad. put key in ignition and put in on position and leave for 30 mins. come back turn it off and back on and try to restart it. any better?

you can have a gm dealer look at it and see if the antilock system and reader is functioning properly. i dont think its anti theft related.

You can do a permanant bypass on this system.
see the PLJX bypass kit at www.PASSLOCK2.com

I have a '99 Silverado that won't start. I turn the key, I can hear the fuel pump kick on, but there no other noise made. (No clicking, humming, or anything) I replaced the battery, alternator, starter, fuses and relays, and nothing helped. I'm told it's a problem with the negative ground. I checked from the battery's negative cable to the ground to the frame. It's tight, and there's no corrosion or rust. I checked the ground connection to the starter, and again it's tight and no corrosion or rust. Also there's no corrosion on the cable posts for the battery.
Are there any other negative grounds to check, or any other possibilities.
Sincerely,
Robert Turner

The first suspect would be the neutral safety switch.

Do you have a test light or voltmeter to do some diagnostics instead of throwing random parts at the problem? The tests can be done at the starter relay socket.

My 1999 Silverado just lost all instruments and will not start. I turned the ignition to start it heard a electrical relay type click and all of the dash guages went dead, the dome light went out. I heard a clicking from behind the fuse panel on the left of the dash. Sounded like a relay clicking on and off. I checked the battery and it is fully charged. I moved the gear selector to different positions to see if it was a netrual switch. I was told it could possibly be a switch on the steering column. If this is the case where is the switch and is it a do it yourself fix

TWO PLACES. You may have heard the sound of a fuse popping behind the left side of the dash. It's called a crank fuse, a 10 amp behind the lower left side. It should be labeled 'crank'. Also under the hood is another possibility, two more circuit protection fuses that will take out power to the start circuit and the starter relay. Under the hood in the left side of the engine compartment. 1. is Ign. C fuse(20amp) and the other is ignition A fuse(40amp). OK If you can read the section 2carpros have set up here on testing fuses. They sell a great cheap test light at the store you'll use for the rest of your life. Look under "test fuses" these will all cause a no nothing. No crank.

All dash lights will not come on. I was told I had a security alarm problem and reset the truck by leaving the key turned over for fifteen minutes and it turned on no problem, but it does not want to turn on anymore. I was told it was because I do not have the original key, but not totally sure. the lights do not work now and the fuel pump is not kicking on. does anyone know what is going on? will an aftermarket alarm system work with a factory key? It does this once or twice a year and I normally would just leave it sit, but I am stumped now. someone help.

Hey SWINESTOPPER,

It sounds like you have a battery or battery cable problem, here is a guide that will help you test the battery. Aslo move the cable around with the key on see if you can hear any electrical changes.

Hi there,

I fear that you have suffered a major electrical loom failure, smote from under the dash or from the vents would be the plastic insulation on the wires melting and burning. There is a very good chance the some of these wires have fused togeather and some of your electrical systems are now inoperable. You are very luck that you did not burn the car out. You will have to access the loom under the dash to inspect for damage you will need the assistance of an auto electrican to help with these repairs.

Start off by checking your battery connections. They should be tight and free of any corrosion. The original batteries are known for problems of acid leaking from the positive terminal. Make sure it's not leaking. If all checks good, have it scanned for trouble codes. You can have this done at your local autozone store free of charge. Let us know what codes are stored.

I checked the cables and the battery. There was not any corrosion and the cables looked good. I took the battery to get checked and the guy at Advanced Auto Parts said the battery showed a low cell. I went ahead and bought a new battery. The truck has started promptly every time and runs good. The service engine soon light has not come back on, so I will not be able to get it checked for any codes as of now. I am still curious to why the engine idled very high before I replaced the battery. Thanks for your help in this matter.

Use a digital multimeter and we can help you do some testing. Place meter leads across battery posts, everything off, what is the reading? If the battery is down, take it off and get it charged.

If battery voltage is lost, where applicable, your security system could be an issue?

You could test the starter circuits, any testing at the starter, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set.

A security system shouldn't effect the starter. The purple wire at the starter S terminal goes hot with the key in the crank position. The starter B terminal is hot all the time.

Just to add, The purple wire at the starter solenoid, should be be hot with the key in the crank position. Is it? Any testing, make sure the tranny is in park or neutral and the e-brake is set. If the wire isn't hot, check circuits at the starter relay in the underhood fuse box. There are applicable fuses, check the fuse/s. Some of the national brand autostores will test the starter for you, if you take it off and take it to them. Let us know.
