My 1992 chevy silverado c3500 w/454 wont stay running just replaced alternator and battery both were bad. Could it be the fuel pump. It starts at times then turns off after a few seconds. Help im new to trucks and american cars.

Do you have a check engine light on?

Check the fuel pressure if it's within specs to rule out a failing fuel pump.

So you got a 454! What are you used to driving?

I have a 1992 Chevy Silverado, and for about two months while changing gears, the truck would just stall and sometimes cut off. I had that fixed by replacing the map sensor. Now, my truck will crank and start but after about two to three seconds, it dies, cut off completely. I had the fuel filter replaced and the same day it drove fine. The next morning, I went to crank it and it crank and started but again cut off after a few seconds. It seems to only be doing this in cold weather.

If I remember correctly, after the initial start-up, your fuel pump is switched on by the oil pressure sending unit. That is GM's method of stopping the pump if a fuel line is ruptured in a crash so it doesn't keep dumping fuel on the ground.

First check your oil level. Next, you should get a nice idle flare-up to 1500 rpm for a few seconds after start-up. That will insure oil pressure gets up right away. In colder weather, the oil is thicker and flows less easily. That idle flare-up becomes even more important.

Have your mechanic check the actual oil pressure at start-up when the engine is cold. If it gets up to normal right away, suspect the oil pressure sending unit.
