Hi I have a chevy malibu with 123, 00 miles or so on it. Four days ago I had an oil change and the water pump changed because I was leaking antifreeze. Today the car started to make a wierd squeeling sound and becasue it was 4pm on a Saturday I brought it the only place open which was Sears. The guy there thought my alternator baring was shot and said it could have been caused by the mechanic who put in my water pump if they put the wrong hose in. I dont remember them saying anything about changing a hose when they changed the water pump but could this be a cause? And if so how can I go about talking to the mechanic place that changed the water pump?

The squealing is probably a loose belt that needs to be retension. The water hose has nothing to do with the alternator.

My question is what's wrong with the alternator is it making noise on its own? If something really wrong with the alternator the battery light will lit up meaning the alternator is not reconditioning the battery.

You sure the Sear's guy is not trying to sell you an alternator because of the squealing? Also are you still leaking antifreeze-if so bring it back.

The Sears guy actually said they were really pricey when it came to aleternators and to wait until Monday to bring it somewhere else. The light did not go on however as soon as the squeling started we brought it in and left it at my normal mechanics. Im glad the water pump had nothing to do with it and I am not still leaking antifreeze. The sears guy acelerated the engine and then held the alternator together and the sqeeling stopped when he pushed the ends together. That is why he thought the bracket was shot. Ill have the mechanic look at the belts and te alternator usually they are pretty good at not trying to sell me something I dont need. THank you
