Steering problem
2003 Chevy Impala 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive

Have been getting a low key squeak or whine type sound when turning a slow corner or moving the steering wheel at a stationary spot. Mechanic said it might be the "clock spring" in the column but this was not the problem. It's not loud and never happens at faster speeds?

Hi donutman,

Thank you for the donation.

If the noise is from around the steering clumn/wheel, it could be from the steering wheel that is brushing against the upper or lower covers.

The other possible source would be from the bushes inside the steering column. Some lubrication should solve the problem. Depending on which bush it is coming from, upper bush can be lubricated by spraying some aerosol grease into the column via the shaft. It requires the steering wheel to be removed. If the noise is from the internals of the column, disassembly is required to lubricate/replace the bushes.
