2000 Chevy Impala over heating and shutting off

The car keeps over-heating and then it shut off. The thermostat has been replaced and I added coolant. What else could possibly be causing the car to over heat and what, if any, damage could adding too much coolant do to the car?

Hi:
Just fill the coolant to the full mark on the jug. Also, if the t-stat is good, I would move to the radiator. Try flushing it or having it rodded out. It may be partially plugged.
