My 2000 Chevrolet Impala 3.4 has an issue with a loud wine.

SYMPTOMS

* Loud intermittent wine coming from somewhere on the right side of the engine
* The loud wine comes once the car gets hot and it constantly continues when the car is in operation
* Car overheats in idle unless the heat is on or accelerating
* Car has an error code of p1404 aka EGR Valve.

I have replaced the radiator because of a leak I had. I also have flushed the system. The water pump is less than 5 years old. I am not sure which direction I should go in to remedy the problem.

Also, I have no performance issues other than the random overheating. The car accelerates fine with no issues.

Thoughts?

1. Check the power steering fluid and add as needed. It may be the pump.

2. Overheating at idle may be a falied cooling system fan on the radiator. Does it work with the ac on?

3. 1404, remove the egr and make sure the passages are clear as carbon is a big issue.

The fans work (cut on) when it reaches the overheating stage. It also works with the AC on. I will check on the egr and the power steerting fluid.

I would start with changing the thermostat.
