Engine Cooling problem
2004 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Automatic 128000 miles

When the car is driving down the road, the temp stays at or alittle below normal but when it is at a stoplight, the temp will go up slowly, alittle faster when the a/c is on. I never hear the fan turn on, the fan that normally you hear come on when a car has been sitting for awhile. Is it the fan that is causing the overheating? If so, what is the actual name for it so I can tell the mechanic what is wrong? Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide. Sal

I think if you are taking it to the mechanic, he might have an idea. Being a mechanic and all.

My guess, he will know the cooling fan isn't coming on.

Hello, let the vehicle idle in the driveway, raise the hood, see if the fan comes on, it may take a while if the vehicle has to warm up. On some models the fan will turn on when you turn on the ac, also the fan may come on when you unplug the cts. Some possibilities, fan motor itself-- fan relay or wiring circuits to or from the relay--cts--bad thermostat-- no coolant flow through the radiator. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
