Check the fan when it starts overheating and make sure it is running. You may have a faulty fan clutch. Also, check your water pump with the vehicle running and make sure it isn't cracked or leaking.

You can't check a thermostat like that. The thermostat should open when the coolant reaches a certain temp. To properly check it, remove it and place it in boiling water to see if it opens. There are directions on our homepage under the DIY section.

Let me know what you find.

The truck still overheats and the waterpump is ok as well as the fan. It only does it when the a/c is on and I am sitting at idle. Any suggestions?

When it gets hot or even overheats, shut the engine off and make sure your fan doesn't come on if it's electric. Then put your hand against the radiator in different areas. If it is cold anywhere then your radiator is plugged or plugging. It should be the same temp all over. You could get radiator cleaner and try that but it doesn't work all that well. If you do get that stuff get the stuff by prestone and not the flush stuff. Then drain your radiator by removing the lower rad hose. Drain all the coolant out and put the cleaner and water in. Run it for 100 miles then drain and change to a 50/50 mix of antifreeze. That is the best mix for cooling as well as winter protection. You could also add the stuff for making the car run cooler, that's been out for years and works fairly well. There are several manufacturers of that stuff.

I have had this vehicle to the shop twise now. I got a new transmission in it about 3 months ago and just last week got a new motor in it. (Both tans and motor where used) but I have gotten it back on friday and there was no heat, it smelt really hot once I stopped at any intersection, bucked here and there and didn't run properly, I called the mechanic and took it back they said is was the thermosat. Got that changed and picked it up today again. The heater is still not working and it still has that hot smell kinda like burning anifreeze. Do you have any suggestions as to what it would be so I don't have to pay more money out. So for if put out close to $3000 between trans and motor.

No heat and smell like burnt coolant
Check if leaking coolant at and or around the intake manifold gasket
If had heat prior to engine replacement we assumes that the heater core and blend system OK and problem is related to the used engine that was replaced and should have the shop look at it

My car (2001 chevy balzer) blows an antifreeze smelling steam out of the interior vent by the windshield what could it be? The car doesn't over heat and this happened all at once, I had to pull over to the side of the road because the steam/smoke covered the windshield so fast.

That's pointing to a leaking heater core. You will be overheating soon so stop driving it until it's fixed.

Based on your description, it sounds like your intake gasket is leaking. This is a common problem. If you can, take a picture of where it's leaking from and upload it for me to see.

My 2000 Blazer is having a heating issue. I have replaced the thermostat the engine will still overheat -there is no heat coming from the heater but then heat will come from the heater core and the engine temp will go down. This does this repeatedly as I am driving. The coolant level is ok, the oil is ok. Any suggestions?

Hi although i, m a novice--check your cooling system for air--there is a bleed plug in the intake just below the thermostat housing--make sure that there is no air in your system--when filling your radiator with the plug removed--when coolant comes out of the hole--replace the plug--

Engine Cooling problem
2001 Chevy Blazer 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 2001 chevy blazer 2WD 6 cyld. It has been heating up and I have flushed the system had the radiator rodded, replaced the thermostat but still heats up. Last night I lost all the water trhough what seemed to be the water pump. I waited a few hours and refilled it and drove over 150 miles and it did not leak any water. The one thing I have noticed before is that my reservoir tank is allways full but the radiator would run low. Could it be the radiator cap? (Which is the nixt tihing I am replacing) or my water pump?
Thanks,
Francisco

One way to test for a bad water pump is to squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine is hot and idling. Careful, because the hose will be HOT! If you do not feel much coolant circulating through the hose when you rev the engine, the pump may be bad. The other cause might be a bad thermostat that is not opening properly (remove and inspect the thermostat), or a clogged radiator

If it continues get it block and pressure tested also pressure test the cap
