Will not stay on without pressing on gas pedal for weeks. Then idled fine one day for weeks and one day back to stalling?

Hi,

The first thing I would do is simply check for engine vacuum leaks. That can cause an engine to stall. Here is a link that shows how it's done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-an-engine-vacuum-gauge

If none are found, then suspect it is related to the idle air control valve (IAC). The IAC is responsible for maintaining engine idle speed. It can fail or where it enters the intake manifold can be plugged.

Here are two links. The first explains how to service one. The second explains in general how one is replaced.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/idle-air-control-valve-service

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-replace-an-idle-speed-control-motor-iac

_____________________________

When you remove it, have a helper cycle the ignition switch from off to on and back off. You should see movement If there is, check to make sure there isn't a carbon build-up when it enters the manifold. If the IAC doesn't respond, chances are it needs to be replaced.

Here are the directions for replacement. The attached pic correlates with the directions.

Idle Air Control Valve

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connector from the fuel charging wiring.

2. Remove the two IAC valve retaining bolts.

3. Remove the IAC valve and IAC gasket.

NOTE: If scraping is necessary, be careful not to damage IAC valve, throttle body gasket surfaces or drop material into throttle body.

INSTALLATION

1. Make sure that both throttle body and valve gasket surfaces are clean.

2. Install IAC gasket on throttle body surface and mount IAC valve, securing it with two retaining screws. Tighten to 9-11 Nm (80-97 in lb).

Hello, thanks for the response. I checked the idle control valve and other sensor on the air filter intake (MAF) and some other sensor with carburetor spray no change in idle. It would stay on long enough to notice difference. I did end up disconnecting and replacing the battery with another know good used battery the following day and behold it turns on and stays on! But as soon as I put it in reverse the CEL light came on but I was still able to drive around with the engine not turning off. I drove it for a few minutes on property. When returning to porch it stalled.

What pins would I need to jump in order to get the CEL flashing code(s)?

Thank you sir for your prompt response before.

Picture related (it's the battery I replaced).

Videos I just took.

First video is me removing the IAC and finding no gasket on there. I did put some clear ATV silicone and put back for now. My dash shows all kind of lights on, flashing, and speedometer not working.

This video shows it staying for a minute with vehicle on and foot on brake and no gas at idle. Even though I have the 4x4 knob on 4Low does not feel like it's engaging.

I crank it and it does not stay on at first. Then I turn on and put it in gear and give it gas then I let it go idle and not and it stays on. If I rev from it staying idle it will shut off. But If I would let it sit there at idle it will barely stay on. Then I drove it back and it shut off while driving.

If the car has some load on engine it stays on barely. But normal driving would not allow that. You have to rev then let go of gas to coast and roll to a stop. I know my writing and videos are not the best. But I hope at the least it's archived on 2CarPros.

The communication connector was frayed. Untwisted it and turned on vehicle. I gave it a lil gas and let go of the gas pedal slowly as to not make it turn off and drove it with a steady foot on gas pedal. CEL light came back on but I no longer had a check gauge light on.

Also, I plugged in the test light where the diagram shows and I get no power and the check engine light did not flash when I jumped the out of the jumper wire to the two connection points on the plug.

Hi,

Do me a favor. Check fuse 11 in the interior fuse panel. See pic 1 Next, check pin 3 for power and pin 1 for continuity to ground.

Here is a link you may find helpful:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

Now, I attached a third pic below which contradicts what the wiring schematic indicates. The schematic (pic 1) indicates fuse 11. The fuse box layout indicates fuse 5. Ugh!!! Do me a favor, check both. If there is no power to fuse 5, check maxi-fuse 2 (pic 4) under hood power distribution box.

In addition to checking the fuse, make sure there is power in and out. Here is a link you may find helpful.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

I have a feeling the IAC is the cause. When you removed it, are you sure the pintel moved when the key was switched on and off and there was no carbon build up in the TB where it mounts?

Let me know what you find.

Joe

I suspect the IAC is the issue. If it isn't allowing air to flow past it at idle, the engine gets no air to run.

Let me know.

Some days it's just one thing after the other ha ha. Ordered the connector, got it today and installed. Bought the cheapest battery I could find at Walmart. And the car turned on fine and stayed on. A little high RPM. But that just be me over analyzing. The front brakes are grinding on the rotors so that's next. But problems seems to be fixed.
