Will start when cold, but after it warms up and I turn it off it will not restart, until it cools down.

Hi,

What you described sounds like a crankshaft position sensor. When they start going bad, they are adversely affected by heat.

Take a look through this link and let me know if you feel it mirrors what you experience:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/symptoms-of-a-bad-crankshaft-sensor

What I would suggest is this. When it refuses to start, check to see if there is spark to the plugs.

Here is a link that shows how that is done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-an-ignition-system

If you have a tachometer, see if the gauge moves at all when cranking and not starting.

If you find there is no spark, the sensor is the most likely cause.

Here is a link that explains how in general one is replaced:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/crankshaft-angle-sensor-replacement

If you look at the attached pic, it shows the sensor-specific to this vehicle. This one will require the removal of the timing belt cover.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe,

So let me tell you what happen. I was doing an oil change, the power steering pressure line was in the way to remove oil filter I had to force out of way, in doing so the line spun a leak. After replacing line which in itself was a monster, start car to test for leaks, when I step out side to check there was oil flying out all over. I turn car of quick only to find out that I forgot to reinstall my oil filter. After reinstalling filter adding another 5 quarts of oil I start car. It started okay let warm up, then turn off. Went to restart it did not start, try again no start. Check fuel pump. Next day started okay but after warm up it would not restart. Trouble shoot all day gave up. Next morning car started normal, I decided to take to advance auto who put the test analyzer and car had a P0337 code which is the crankshaft sensor. Looking into that problem on my PC an expert on Kia stipulated the different causes that can cause that problem with the sensor. One that he stipulate was that if fluid got on it it will cause the problem. Will when I left the oil filter off that sensor is located with in 6 to 10 inches away from oil filter and I am sure that oil got onto that sensor causing my problem. So before I turn the car of I decided to take the car for a long ride on highway after 45 minute ride came home turn car of started normal did many times all normal. Now I believe that oil dry up and problem removed. Trouble light clear and has not return. So what do you think about my analysis?

Thank you

Hi,

The idea that the crank sensor may have been the issue? Yes, I feel it could. What to do is this. If the car shuts off again and won't restart, check to see if there is spark to the plugs. If the problem is related to the crankshaft position sensor, you won't have spark.

Here is a link that shows how to test for spark:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-an-ignition-system

Another thing you can check is if the tachometer moves at all when cranking the engine. If the sensor is bad, it won't move at all.

As far as your analysis, I agree. The only thing to keep in mind is oil doesn't evaporate. Hopefully, it has cleaned off and won't give you trouble. If you do experience any more issues, let me know. I'll do my best to help.

Take care of yourself, and feel free to come back anytime in the future. You are always welcome here.

Joe
