I have a 2004 Dodge Status sedan 2.4 dohc, and recently the engine light has been on. I had the code read and showed an EVAP system error. I replaced the
gas cap, had the code erased, and after a few days came back, same code. Would appreciate any tips for a diyr like me. Thank you,
Mario

What is the EXACT trouble code that is indicating?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

That would enable me to understand the problm and get the required information.

DTC P0440: GENERAL EVAP SYSTEM FAILURE
When Monitored and Set Condition:

When Monitored: Engine Running. Fuel Level greater than 12%. Ambient Temperature between 4°C and 32°C (39°F and 89°F)

Set Condition: The PCM does not see the NVLD switch close during the medium/large leak test. The PCM will then increase the vacuum supply to the EVAP system by increasing flow through the EVAP Purge valve. If the switch does not close with an increase in vacuum, an error is detected. Two Trip Fault.

Possible Causes
GOOD TRIP EQUAL TO ZERO
VISUAL AND PHYSICAL INSPECTION
EVAP PURGE SOLENOID VACUUM SUPPLY INSPECTION
EVAP PURGE SOLENOID STUCK CLOSED
NVLD SWITCH OPERATION
(Z1) GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN
NVLD ASSEMBLY
(K107) NVLD SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION LEAK DETECTION
PCM

2004 Dodge Stratus 6 cyl 69,000 miles

Within the last couple of weeks I've had the same problem. At first the car would turn off when I came to a stop. When I hit the accelerator the car would jerk and the check engine light turns on and the car turns off. If I caught it in time and hit the accelerator before it turned off it would keep going but the check engine light would stay on. I took it to my mechanic and he repaired it for some sensor that came up when he scanned the car for the check engine light. The problem is still occuring and now it's even jerking as I'm driving on the highway. I read through the forum and someone is having the same exact problem but no one has yet to reply. Any suggestions/help!

Knowing the exact code would be great, the problem may be related. Any tune up done yet? Does it feel like the engine is misfiring? Is the check engine light still on?

Was out of town and the check engine light came on.

Stop at a local mechanic and he checked it out with his computer. He turned the light out and said it was the O2 Sensor. He couldn't change it but said it would be ok to drive it home and have a local mechnic look at it.

I drove it home 120 miles and the light stayed out.

Could his computer have had a false reading or could the O2 sensor have started working once again?

Is it true that if the O2 sensor goes out, the only consequences is the fuel will burn lean and result in poorer gas mileage?

I don't want to get stranded somewhere waiting on someone to fix it.

IT wont just die out on you, you may notice a harder time starting it and you will have poorer gas mileage and it will run roughly.

It wont strand you tho.

The other day I went to start my car and it had a hard time starting. It did start however the check engine light came on. While driving the car seemed to sputter a bit. I am wondering if maybe this is something to do with the fuel system?

Its possible but if you can scan for codes or get the codes that will help the job of the check engine light is to take the guess out of the equation
and pin point the trouble area

check if it need a tune up

I have a dodge stratus 2004 2.4L dohc and my engine light keeps turning on. I took it to a car shop and was told that my catalytic converter is broken so it kept breaking my oxygen sensor. I replaced the cat and the sensor and disconnected the battery and it was off for about a day then it turned back on what do you thing the problem is? Do I need to have it cleared by a store like autozone?

I would recommend having the computer rescanned to see if it is the same code. Did you do the work or was it done at a shop?
