I've got a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport with the original 4.0 in it. I am not getting a very accurate reading for the fuel level. So, before we order a new fuel sending unit we want to just see whats going on and make sure something didn't just get lose do to all of the off roading it has endured. How would I check this? Is it essential to drop the tank?

You can do a sweep test by disconnecting the sender and the gauge wil go one way, ground the sender wire and the gauge will go the other way. If it does, then the sender is bad and yes, the tank must come down
