Transmission has issues shifting?

Hey I have a 2000 buick century custom. After driving for a couple miles the transmission has issues shifting and you can hear some type of "winding" noise whick I believe is coming from trans. But after parking/shutting engine down then driving it a couple mins later it drives normal. What could be the problem?
