My engine will not start up and run why?

When I start up my car, my Coolant gauge will go to the correct temperature for about two minutes, than it will drop down to completely cold. Once cold, my engine idles in the 2000 region.

Not only that, after I drive my car and than start it up again like 10 minutes later, I have problems starting it, it cranks but won't fire and usually takes a good 1-2 minutes to get it to fire. (I believe it's because the engine is flooded after driving at this point)

Any idea what could be wrong here? I was told MAS could be bad, but I don't think these saturns have one. So my only conclusion is the coolant temp sensor.

I appreciate your help! :)

Your on the right track it sound's like a bad coolant temp sensor I would also check the connector going to it they get corroded. If it's corroded you will have to replace the connector too. The sensor is only 10 get a brass tipped one the plastic tipped one's crack. Also take it to a auto part's store and have them scan your car for code's. Let me know what code number's you have. Also your right that model doesn't have a mass air flow sensor it only has a map sensor.

A bad coolant temperature sensor will display erratic temperature reading and send error codes to the ECM, which can increase the RPM or shut off the engine depending on the signal.
The resistance of a coolant temperature changes with the temperature and that is the signal gets received by the ECM.
That sensor can be tested using the multimeter and checking the resistance (see below for the resistance chart).

Here are some helpful articles:

I have attached the replacement and the resistance chart for the coolant temperature sensor.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.
